What is Dorn Therapy?
The Dorn Method was developed in Germany by Dieter Dorn and is known for being gentle and interactive. Instead of forceful manipulation, the practitioner applies light, steady pressure — usually with the thumbs — to areas around the joints and along the spine, while you make a slow, swinging movement such as gently moving a leg or arm. Because you are an active participant, the work is paced by your body and your comfort.
Dorn work typically looks at the body from the ground up: the feet, ankles, knees and hips first, then the pelvis, back, shoulders and neck. Sessions often include simple self-help exercises you can repeat at home.
People come to Dorn Therapy for
Supported by Ayurvedic doctors and a clinical nutritionist. Complementary to your doctor's care — individual experiences vary.
Why it suits modern routines
Sitting for long hours, carrying a heavy backpack, looking down at a phone, or reduced activity in later years can all leave the body feeling uneven or stiff. Dorn Therapy at Samanvaya offers a calm, hands-on session that encourages awareness of posture and balance, along with practical habits for everyday sitting, standing and movement. Many clients describe feeling lighter and more comfortable after a session; individual experiences vary and no outcome is guaranteed.
Who it is for
- Desk-job professionals experiencing stiffness from long periods of sitting and screen work.
- Students who spend many hours bent over books and laptops and want to learn better posture habits.
- Seniors (55+) seeking a gentle, non-forceful, hands-on approach — subject to clearance from their doctor where needed.
Your session, step by step
- Consultation. We discuss your history, any diagnosed conditions, scans or medical advice you have received, and your comfort preferences.
- Observation. Simple checks of standing posture and leg length are made with you fully clothed.
- Gentle hands-on work. Light pressure is combined with your slow movements, joint by joint. You can ask to pause at any time.
- Self-help exercises. You learn two or three easy movements to continue at home.
- Aftercare. Simple guidance on rest, hydration and daily posture.
When Dorn Therapy is not appropriate
Please tell us beforehand — and consult your doctor — if you have any of the following, as Dorn work may need to be avoided or modified:
- osteoporosis, recent fractures, or a recent injury or surgery;
- a diagnosed spinal condition, disc problem, nerve symptoms (numbness, tingling, weakness) or severe pain;
- pregnancy, inflammatory joint disease flare-ups, blood clotting issues, or cancer.
Sudden, severe or worsening pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain after a fall needs urgent medical attention, not a wellness session. Dorn Therapy is a complementary practice and does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a doctor or physiotherapist.
Build on your session
Many clients combine Dorn work with props-based yoga therapy for gentle strengthening, keep a Spine Fix on their chair for more upright everyday sitting, and use the Slant Board as part of a home routine between sessions.
