Knee Comfort After 55: Gentle Everyday Habits
Supported sitting, gentle movement and simple daily habits that help seniors look after their knees.

Knee discomfort becomes more common as we age, and it can quietly shrink our world — fewer walks, avoiding stairs, less time on the floor with grandchildren. While we cannot promise to “fix” knees, we can share gentle habits that many seniors find helpful for staying comfortable and active.
Keep moving, gently
Regular, comfortable movement — short walks on level ground, seated leg movements, gentle supported stretches — tends to feel better for many people than long periods of inactivity. Little and often is the key.
Sit smart
- Choose chairs with a firm seat and armrests that are high enough to rise from easily.
- Avoid sitting with legs tightly crossed for long periods.
- If you enjoy floor or kneeling practice, use support: a cushion, folded blanket or a foam-topped Vajra Asanam — with your doctor's approval if you have knee problems.
Try supported practice
Props-based yoga therapy uses chairs, walls and blocks so seniors can build strength and balance without strain. A slant board with wall support offers a gentle calf stretch, and foot reflexology offers a relaxing, seated session.
Look after the whole body
Comfortable footwear, staying hydrated, good sleep and managing body weight sensibly all support joint comfort. Follow any exercise or medication advice from your doctor or physiotherapist.
See a doctor if…
Your knee is hot, red or very swollen; you cannot bear weight; it locks or gives way; pain follows a fall or injury; or pain is severe, worsening or disturbing sleep.
