Using Yoga Props for Comfort and Support

A beginner guide to using blocks, straps, cushions and chairs to make yoga-based movement more accessible and comfortable.

Props can reduce unnecessary strain and help a participant find a stable position. They are tools for support, not proof that a pose is being done incorrectly.

Choose the prop for the task

A block can bring the floor closer, a strap can extend reach, a cushion can support a seated position and a chair can provide balance. Use clean, stable equipment placed on a non-slip surface.

Do not use props to force range

A strap should not pull a joint into pain. A block should not create pressure on a vulnerable area. The supported position should make breathing and control easier.

Check stability before moving

Test the prop with light pressure. Avoid stacking items in unstable ways and keep enough space to exit the position without falling.

Use clear progressions

Begin with more support and shorter holds. Reduce support only when the movement remains comfortable and controlled. Progress is optional, not a requirement.

Medical conditions need appropriate advice

Recent surgery, severe osteoporosis, acute injury or unexplained pain may require individual guidance from a qualified healthcare professional before yoga-based movement.
